Ronald Pearl - Guitarist, Composer

Bio

Let’s do this in the first person:
I  received my training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where I studied with Michael Lorimer, George Sakellariou, and Philip Rosheger.  A meeting with Andres Segovia resulted in a scholarship to study in Spain, where I worked with Jose Luis Rodrigo  and Jose Tomas in Alicante, Spain.  I then studied for three years with Aaron Shearer, and earned a Master’s degree from the Peabody Conservatory.  To all of those teachers, I owe a great expression of thanks. It is remarkable to me that after all these years I still hear their advice and wisdom that was a part of all those lessons.

After the study phase was completed (as if it ever is...), I spent two decades performing with guitarist Julian Gray, giving concerts throughout the US, Canada, and England, and releasing four highly acclaimed recordings on the Dorian label. In addition to solo appearances, my recent performance activities include collaborations with singers and chamber musicians. As a teacher, I’ve given masterclasses, workshops, and have been a guest artist at such venues as the National Guitar Workshop, Yale University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Stetson University’s International Guitar Workshop, and California State University’s “SummerArts” Festival.

As a composer, my works have been performed, recorded, and broadcast in the US and abroad.  My recent trio, “Jacob’s Ladder” was premiered in Istanbul, by Triobio, and subsequently aired nationwide in Turkey;  “My Name is Red”, for solo guitar, was broadcast on the nationally syndicated radio program, Guitar Alive. "C" for guitar quartet has been recorded by the 1East Guitar Quartet; and a large ensemble work, "An Ever Lightening Sky" was premiered recently at Loyola University Maryland. I've been very fortunate, recently, to compose for the Atlantic Guitar Quartet, and the Alturas Duo, both of whom premiered works of mine last year - those works are on the Music for Guitar page, and the Audio/Video page, as well.

I am currently  an Associate Professor at Loyola University, in Baltimore, Maryland, where I teach courses in music history and theory, and direct guitar studies. Since 2000, I have directed a community guitar ensemble (link on the Friends page). Over the years I have arranged and composed a lot of music for the ensemble.

On the Audio page are files of compositions for solo guitar, guitar duo, guitar quartet, choral works, solo piano, orchestral, and chamber pieces. All scores and parts are available upon request. See the
