Ronald Pearl - Guitarist, Composer
Let’s do this in the first person:
I received my training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where I studied with Michael Lorimer, George Sakellariou, and Philip Rosheger. A meeting with Andres Segovia resulted in a scholarship to study in Spain, where I worked with Jose Luis Rodrigo and Jose Tomas in Alicante, and Santiago de Compostela. This was followed by three years with Aaron Shearer, at the Peabody Conservatory. While there, I also had the opportunity to work with Ray Chester in ensemble, and later lessons. To all of those teachers, I owe a great expression of thanks. It is remarkable to me that after all these years I still hear their advice and wisdom that was a part of all those lessons.
After the study phase was completed (as if it ever is...), I spent two decades performing with guitarist Julian Gray, giving concerts throughout the US, Canada, and England, and releasing highly acclaimed recordings on the Dorian label. In addition to recent solo appearances, my performance activities include collaborations with singers and chamber musicians. As a teacher, I’ve given masterclasses, workshops, and have been a guest artist at such venues as the National Guitar Workshop, Yale University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Stetson University’s International Guitar Workshop, and California State University’s “SummerArts” Festival.
As a composer, my works have been performed, recorded, and broadcast throughout the US and Canada, South America, Europe, and Asia, including recent premieres in Switzerland, Germany, and Finland, and New York. I've been very fortunate to compose for the Atlantic Guitar Quartet, Alturas Duo, En Cuerdas, Duo Vitare, the Arabesque Duo, Duo Anova, Zane Forshee, Robert Trent, Adam Pettit and Connie Sheu, the ADAA Trio, the Avanti Guitar Trio, the Patterson/Sutton Duo - information about those works and their premieres is on the Upcoming-News page.
I am currently a Full Professor at Loyola University Maryland, in Baltimore, Maryland, where I teach courses in music theory and history.
On the Audio/Video page are recent performances of compositions for solo guitar, guitar duo, guitar quartet, solo piano, and chamber pieces. All scores and parts are available for download - go to the Scores page. I can be reached via the Contact page.
