For solo guitar, this work takes its inspiration from the novel of the same name by Nobel Laureate, Orhan Pamuk. The novel is set in Turkey during the 15th-16thcenturies. Intersections with Venice is heard in the introduction with a veiled quote from Mendelssohn’s Song Without Words, op. 19, no. 6. From there the piece moves steadily eastward. The music is not intended as an imitation of Turkish music, but rather an homage to some of the musical techniques of the Islamic world.
